6 and 7 November - Christian Forshaw "How To Make Your Saxophone Sing"

Christian Forshaw is a saxophonist and composer whose career to date reflects the qualities required of a musician in the 21st Century. Long gone are the days where a musician spends an entire career working within the same boundaries and increasingly musicians find their work transcending genre after genre. Forshaw's initial musical influences were the Beatles, traditional choral music and a hefty dose of hard rock. He secured a place at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama and moved to London in 1991. Although Christian had played in big bands, jazz small groups and pop bands he always had a very clear idea of how he wanted the instrument to sound in a more classical context. The purity and lyricism he had experienced within choral music was something he sought from the saxophone and by studying the instrument classically he was able to explore this further. Upon leaving the Guildhall in 1995 he began working with groups such as the London Sinfonietta, Philharmonia and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe.

On 6 and 7 November Christian will be visiting Winchester Cathedral to run an exciting weekend entitled 'How to Make Your Saxophone Sing'. October 2009 - Weekend with Paul Edmund-Davies at Winchester Cathedral

On Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th October 2009 Paul Edmund-Davies will be coming to run a series of workshops and repertoire sessions, drawing on his experience of film and orchestral music whilst working as principal of the LSO and Philharmonia. For Grades 3 - 5 on the Saturday we will be playing from film scores such as Titanic, Honey I Shrunk the Kids and Star Wars, whilst on the Sunday (grade 6+) we will be performing brand new flute choir works by Andy Scott. There will also be sessions on how to get the best out of your practise, finger boot camp and how to practise studies, as well as a few individual masterclass sessions (as always these are limited so please contact me first).

Just Flutes will be down for the weekend with a fantastic range of flutes, sheet music, CDs and accessories - if there is anything in particular you'd like to look at give them a ring or let me know and they will bring it with them.

Tickets are £20 per day and are available now from Winchester Cathedral Box Office, www.winchester-cathedral.org.uk or 01962 857275.

May 2009 - Weekend with Sarah Newbold at Winchester Cathedral

It was great to have Sarah Newbold with us for the weekend, she was totally inspiring and fun to be with! One of the most exciting points was when she produced a fitness ball and said "Now play the flute sitting on it"! It was amazing to feel how it opened up the back to improve posture and breathing, and it was also a huge novelty for adults and children to sit and play on it!

The evening concert was held in the Octagon at Pilgrim's School where Sarah performed a stunning recital along with Tim Carey on piano. The weekend was supported by Just Flutes.

October 2008 - Weekend with Ian Clarke at Winchester Cathedral

Ian was welcomed back for another weekend supporting Flautissimo, the Southampton Flute Orchestra. The theme of the weekend was 'Wow! How exciting!' as we discovered alien noises and played his composition 'Midnight Creep'.

Both flute days were really well supported with over 60 people attending. The evening recital was held in the United Church, Winchester, during which Ian performed his newest work 'Hatching Aliens' with pianist Tim Carey. Again there was a fantastic attendance with over 100 people in the audience.

This weekend raised £300 for Flautissimo, thank you to everyone that came along. Unfortunately I don't have any photos as my camera was stolen shortly after :-( The weekend was supported by Just Flutes.
